Rules in both countries change, and they differ sharply by pass type, so check the current position with your employer and the relevant ministry before you plan anything. • The family shortlists, he decides. Relatives can visit and ask around; they should not be finalising on his behalf.
• One point of contact. Several relatives messaging the other family separately looks disorganised and unserious.

Planning the nikah around leave

Leave in these sectors is usually one block, often three to four weeks, and often only after the first contract year. Fit the wedding to the leave rather than hoping the leave will stretch.

1. Finish shortlisting, verification and video conversations before the flight.
2. Use the first week for meeting in person, with families present.

Money, honesty and dowry

A ringgit or Singapore dollar salary sounds larger in taka than it feels in Klang or Tuas. Once dormitory fees, food, transport, remittances and the loan that paid for the permit are taken out, many workers are living on far less than their families imagine.

Say the real figure. Say how much of the migration cost is still owed. Set den mohor at a level that can genuinely be paid, and pay attention to the prompt and deferred split rather than only the headline number.

Demanding, giving or taking dowry is a criminal offence under the Dowry Prohibition Act 2018. The cost of a work permit is not a reason to ask a bride's family for anything.

The scams that target this community

Migrant workers are targeted precisely because they are far away, they have savings, and they are in a hurry when leave approaches. The patterns repeat: a profile that will never appear on video, a family nobody in the district can place, a sudden medical emergency requiring a transfer, a broker who wants a fee before any introduction.
