The Complete Nikah Process in Bangladesh (Step-by-Step)
Getting married soon? Here is the full nikah process in Bangladesh, explained simply and in order.
The nikah is the Islamic marriage contract. In Bangladesh it follows a clear sequence. Here is each step so you and your family know what to expect.
Step 1: Proposal and family agreement
Families meet, exchange biodata, and agree the match is suitable. This is where compatibility, values and expectations are discussed.
Step 2: Agreeing the mahr (den mohor)
Both sides agree the mahr — the bride's right — and record it clearly. Keep it fair and genuine.
Step 3: The nikah ceremony
An authorised Kazi conducts the nikah. The groom and bride each give consent (ijab and qabul) in the presence of witnesses. Two adult male witnesses (or one male and two female) are required.
Step 4: Signing the kabin nama
The marriage is recorded in the kabin nama (marriage contract), which both parties, witnesses and the Kazi sign. This is the legal record.
Step 5: Registration
The marriage is registered with the authorised registrar, making it official under Bangladeshi law. Keep a certified copy.
Step 6: Walima
The groom hosts the walima (marriage feast) to announce the marriage to the community, following the Sunnah.
A note on doing it simply
Islam encourages keeping marriage easy, not burdensome. A simple, sincere nikah with a fair mahr is closer to the Sunnah than an expensive show.
