How to Verify Someone You Met Online Before Families Meet
A practical checklist for checking that an online match is who they say they are: live video, reverse image search, workplace and NID checks, marital status, and a family reference.
A woman in Rajshahi has been messaging a man for three weeks. He says he is a mechanical engineer in Doha, thirty-one, family originally from Bogura. He is warm, he replies quickly, he has already spoken about his mother. He has also refused a video call four times, twice because of a broken camera and twice because of the night shift. Her cousin has started asking questions. She has started defending him.
That is the moment this article is for. Online match kivabe verify korben is not a hostile question, and it is not a sign that you distrust someone. It is basic diligence, and every honest person on a matrimony platform expects it. The dishonest ones are the only people who take offence.
Verification is a step, not an accusation
In a traditional proposal, verification happened without anyone naming it. A relative knew the family, someone had seen the house, a neighbour could vouch for the father. Online, that entire layer is missing, and nothing has replaced it except your own checking.
So say it plainly and early. Something like: before we take this further I would like a video call and to know where you work, and you are welcome to check the same about me. Framing it as mutual removes almost all of the awkwardness, and the reaction you get is itself the first piece of information.
Start with a live video call, before anything else
This is the single highest-value check and it costs nothing. Not a recorded clip, not photographs, not voice notes. A live call, with the face visible and the light on.
- Do it within the first week. The longer an unverified conversation runs, the more emotionally expensive it becomes to walk away, and people who are lying rely on exactly that.
- Ask for something spontaneous. Ask them to show the room, or to hold up three fingers. A recycled video or a stolen identity cannot follow instructions.
- Watch the background, not the face. An office, a flat, a labour accommodation in the Gulf all look like what they are. A permanently blank wall is worth noticing.
- Repeat it at least twice. One good call can be staged. Three calls at different times of day rarely can.
If someone will not do a video call after two or three polite requests, you already have your answer. Stop, and treat everything you have been told as unconfirmed.
Reverse image search and the photo trail
Photographs are the cheapest thing to fake and the easiest to check. Run their profile pictures through a reverse image search on your phone or computer. If the same face appears under a different name, on a stock photo site, or attached to a social media account in another country, you have found a fabricated profile in about ninety seconds.
Look at the photo set as a whole too. Real people have inconsistent pictures: bad lighting, old haircuts, family members in the frame. A profile with four flawless studio images, no background detail and no other people in any of them deserves more checking, not less. Our guide to spotting a fake matrimony profile goes through the other signals in detail.
Checking work, study and income
Most exaggeration in matrimony is not invented identity. It is inflated status: a supervisor who becomes a manager, a diploma that becomes a degree, a salary quoted before deductions and debt.
- Ask for the employer's name and the exact designation. Then look up the company. A real firm has a real address, a phone number and other employees.
- Check the professional trail. LinkedIn, a university page, a departmental listing, a registration number for doctors and engineers. Consistency across two or three independent sources is what matters.
- For probashi matches, ask about the visa category and the employer. A work permit tied to a named company is very different from an uncertain arrangement, and this is a fair question rather than an intrusive one.
- Treat quoted salaries as approximate. Overseas income sounds larger than it is once accommodation, remittance and recruitment debt are taken out.
None of this needs to be done aggressively. Ask over two or three conversations, and let the answers accumulate.
Marital status, the check people skip
This is the most consequential verification and the one families are most reluctant to raise. Ask directly whether the person has been married before, whether a divorce was completed and registered, and whether there are children.
There is a legal dimension worth knowing. Muslim marriages and divorces in Bangladesh are required to be registered under the Muslim Marriages and Divorces (Registration) Act 1974, which means a properly conducted divorce leaves a paper trail. A second marriage while a first subsists also requires permission from the arbitration council, a position the High Court has upheld — reported by New Age and by The Daily Star.
In practice: if someone tells you they are divorced, it is reasonable to ask to see the registered divorce documentation before the families commit. If anything about the answer is unclear, speak to a family lawyer rather than accepting a verbal assurance.
The family reference test
This is the oldest verification method in Bangladesh and it still outperforms everything else. Ask for two things: a video call with a parent or elder sibling, and the name of someone in their home district who your family can independently ask about them.
A genuine proposal produces both within a few days. Someone hiding a marriage, a job that does not exist or a family that does not know they are searching will produce delays, excuses and eventually a reason why this is unnecessary. If the person is abroad, a family call is even more important, because their household in Bangladesh is the part you can actually verify.
Signals that should end the conversation
- Any request for money. Emergency, medical bill, visa fee, phone bill, business shortfall. There is no acceptable version of this before marriage.
- Pressure to move off the platform immediately. A rush to WhatsApp before the first video call removes every protection a matrimony site offers.
- Rapid emotional escalation. Talk of marriage within days, heavy declarations, insistence on secrecy from families. This is the standard pattern described in Romance Scam Warning Signs.
- Requests for private photographs, ever. Nothing legitimate requires them, and images sent are images lost.
- Details that shift. Company name, district, siblings, age. Keep short notes; inconsistencies show up in writing far more clearly than in memory.
How these approaches actually operate in Bangladesh is documented in Matrimony Scams in Bangladesh. Reporting a profile costs you nothing and protects the next person.
What platform verification does and does not do
A verified platform removes the largest risk, which is that the person does not exist at all. It cannot tell you whether someone is kind, whether their family is honest about their circumstances, or whether they are right for you. Those still require conversations, references and a first meeting handled sensibly — How to Meet Safely for the First Time covers that stage.
On amarjibon, every profile is NID-verified with a liveness selfie check, which means the person you are speaking to has proved they are a real, identified individual rather than a photograph someone found online. Your phone number stays private until you choose to share it, families can be involved from the first conversation, and you can filter on observance, education, profession, district of origin and marital status. The platform is bilingual in English and বাংলা.
