How to Have a Beautiful Wedding on a Small Budget in Bangladesh
A genuinely workable plan for a wedding under Tk 3 lakh in Bangladesh — guest list, venue, food, clothes and photography — without debt and without apologising to anyone.
A friend of ours married last winter in a community hall in Mirpur. One event, a hundred and twenty guests, biryani and borhani, a stage made of white cloth and marigolds, and a cousin with a good camera. The total came to just under Tk 2 lakh. Six months later they had a deposit for a flat instead of a loan to repay.
Kom bajete biye is not a sad wedding. It is a wedding where the money goes to the marriage rather than to one evening. This is how to plan one in Bangladesh in 2026, line by line, without pretending that family pressure does not exist.
Simplicity is the tradition, not the exception
It is worth saying at the start, because it removes the shame that many families feel. In Islamic tradition, ease in marriage is praised and extravagance is not. The nikah itself requires very little: consent, witnesses, an agreed mahr, and registration afterwards. Everything else that we now call a wedding is culture, and culture is negotiable.
If you want to see how little the ceremony genuinely requires, this walkthrough of the Sunnah method of nikah is a useful thing for parents to watch too. The walima matters, but the Sunnah walima is a meal offered within your means, not a competition. We cover it in The Walima.
Start with the guest list, because it is the budget
Every other decision follows the number of people you feed. At Tk 800 a head, cutting a hundred names saves Tk 80,000 — more than you will save by changing anything else on the list.
- Write the list in three tiers. Must invite, should invite, would be nice. Fund tier one properly and stop there.
- Count families, not names. One invitation to a household of six is six plates. Decide early whether children and plus-ones are included.
- Set the number before the venue. Booking a 500-capacity hall creates 500 guests. The room fills itself.
- Give both sides an equal share. If the ceiling is 150, that is 75 each. It ends the argument before it starts.
Venues that cost a fraction of a convention hall
Convention halls in Dhaka on a December Friday are the single most expensive way to hold a wedding. There are four cheaper routes families use successfully:
- Community centres and club halls in areas away from the commercial belt. Often a third of the price of a convention hall for the same three hours.
- A mosque nikah followed by a restaurant walima. Many restaurants will reserve a floor or a private room with no separate hall rent at all.
- Home or rooftop. For under a hundred guests this is entirely workable, and in district towns it is still the norm rather than a compromise.
- Off-peak timing. A weekday lunch outside the December-to-February wedding season is often dramatically cheaper, and the good vendors are actually available.
Whatever you choose, get the quotation in writing with the service charge, parking and cancellation terms stated. Those clauses are where small budgets get broken, and they are set out in Choosing a Wedding Venue in Dhaka.
Food: fewer items, done well
Guests remember whether the food was good, not whether there were eleven items. A well-made kacchi, one roast, salad, borhani and a single dessert satisfies a Bangladeshi wedding crowd completely. A ten-item buffet mostly produces leftovers and a bigger bill.
- Use a neighbourhood caterer, not the venue's default. Ask three, in person, and ask for references from weddings they did last season.
- Cut the extras that nobody counts. Bottled soft drinks, a second dessert, imported fruit, an evening tea station.
- Serve at tables where you can. Buffet service leads to significant waste at Bangladeshi weddings, and you pay for every plate.
- Plan for leftovers. Agree in advance where surplus food goes. Distributing it is a far better ending than throwing it away.
Clothes, gold and the pressure to look wealthy
This is where budgets quietly break. Twenty-two carat gold crossed Tk 217,382 per bhori in October 2025 according to BAJUS, and The Daily Star has reported on families borrowing and renting jewellery so the photographs look right. If a set is being bought on credit for one night of appearances, that is a debt disguised as a tradition.
- Buy one good piece rather than a full set. A single well-chosen ring or bangles is honest and lasting.
- Rent, or wear the family's existing gold. Both are common now, and nobody at the event can tell.
- Choose a sharee you will wear again. A Tk 20,000 katan worn twice a year is better value than a Tk 90,000 lehenga worn once.
- Skip the second parlour package. One event with professional makeup is enough. The other days can be done at home.
And to be completely clear: anything the groom's side asks for as a condition of the marriage — cash, furniture, a motorcycle, gold — is dowry, and demanding, giving or taking it is a criminal offence under the Dowry Prohibition Act 2018. A small budget is never a reason to accept a demand, and a large one is never a reason to make one.
Photography, cards and the things you can do yourself
- Book a photographer for the main event only. Coverage of all three days is what triples this line.
- Digital invitations for most, printed for elders. Fifty printed cards for relatives who expect them, a designed image for everyone else.
- Flowers from the wholesale market. Shahbagh in Dhaka, and the equivalent flower market in most district towns, at a fraction of a decorator's rate.
- Borrow the small things. Serving dishes, lights, chairs, and the car. Every family has a network for this and most people are glad to help.
A worked plan under Tk 2.5 lakh
- Venue and food, 150 guests at Tk 900 — Tk 1,35,000, in a community hall booked off-peak.
- Decoration — Tk 20,000, wholesale flowers and simple fabric work.
- Clothes for the couple — Tk 40,000, both outfits, bought to be worn again.
- Parlour, one event — Tk 12,000.
- Photography — Tk 25,000 for one photographer for the main day, with raw files included.
- Cards, transport, mishti, registration and tips — Tk 25,000 together.
- Contingency — Tk 20,000, because something always comes up.
That is a complete wedding, with photographs, good food and a full hall, for roughly a sixth of what a convention-hall wedding now costs. The comparison is set out in What a Dhaka Wedding Really Costs.
How to hold the line with relatives
The hardest part of a small wedding is not the arithmetic. It is the phone call from an uncle who thinks the family will be talked about. The Daily Star has written about how heavily this weighs on young Bangladeshis, and how much of the exhaustion around marriage is social rather than personal.
- Announce the plan once, early, calmly, as a decision rather than a proposal open for discussion.
- Give a reason people respect: saving for a home, or keeping the marriage free of debt.
- Let one confident elder on each side handle the objections. It is far easier coming from them.
- If a relative wants a bigger event, they are welcome to host and fund one themselves. That offer usually ends the conversation.
No family that spent within its means has ever regretted it in the first year of marriage. A great many who borrowed have.
Spend on the marriage, not the evening
The couples who start well are the ones who agreed on money before they agreed on a date, and who chose each other carefully in the first place. If you are at the beginning of that search, our budget planner helps with the numbers.
On amarjibon, every profile is NID-verified with a liveness selfie check, families can be part of the conversation from the start, and you can filter on the things that actually decide compatibility — observance, education, district of origin, and expectations about money, work and living arrangements. It is bilingual in English and বাংলা, and your phone number stays private until you choose to share it.
