Marriage Media and Ghotok Fraud: How Families Get Cheated
Advance fees for profiles that do not exist, photographs lifted from Facebook, salaries invented for a groom abroad. The patterns behind marriage media fraud in Bangladesh, and how to protect your family before the money leaves your hand.
The office is on the third floor of a market building, above a mobile phone shop. There is a laminated signboard on the landing, a glass-topped table, an album of biodatas in plastic sleeves, and a man who is calling your father bhai within the first minute. He turns the pages slowly. Four profiles, and three of them are almost exactly what your family described on the phone. To get the contact details there is a registration fee. Ten thousand taka, payable today, because the good ones do not stay on the list long.
Sometimes that office is completely honest. Ghotoks have done careful, useful work in Bangladeshi families for generations, and many marriage media businesses earn their fee properly. But the same room, the same album and the same gentle urgency also make one of the easiest frauds in the country to run. Marriage media protarona works because the people being cheated are hopeful, embarrassed to ask hard questions, and under family pressure to move quickly. This article is about telling the two apart before the money leaves your hand.
What you are actually paying for
A marriage media sells introductions. That is the whole product. It does not sell a marriage, it cannot guarantee an outcome, and there is nothing wrong with charging for the work of finding and screening candidates. Most offices structure it in three parts:
- A registration or membership fee to put your biodata on their list and open their list to you.
- A per-profile or per-introduction charge when they pass on contact details or arrange a meeting.
- A success fee at the time of the nikah, sometimes fixed, sometimes a share of what the families spend.
None of that is illegal. The fraud begins at a very specific point: when you pay for something that does not exist, or that has been deliberately misdescribed. Keep that line in your head, because it is the only clean test you have.
Marriage media protarona: the patterns families get caught by
These are the recurring shapes, not accusations against any particular business. If you recognise more than one of them in the same office, stop and take your family home.
- The advance fee for profiles that do not exist. Money is taken up front, then the promised matches keep almost arriving. One is travelling. One's father has fallen ill. One has just been engaged. The album is real; the people in it were never available.
- The recycled album. The same striking photographs appear in three different offices across a district, because they were lifted from public Facebook and Instagram accounts.
- The inflated income. A groom described as a project engineer in Dubai on a large tax-free salary turns out to be on a general labour visa with recruitment debt still outstanding. Nobody technically lied to you in writing. Nothing was verifiable either.
- The one-way information flow. They hold your daughter's photographs, your address, your NID copy, your income details and your phone numbers. You hold a first name and a mobile number that is switched off by Thursday.
- The queue-jump urgency. Another family is coming at five o'clock with cash. If you want this profile held for you, pay a token now. The token is never small and never refundable.
- The disappearing agent. The office was rented month to month, the signboard came down over a weekend, and the mobile number was registered to somebody else's NID.
- Dowry dressed as formality. A middleman raises what the bride's family will "naturally" give — furniture, a motorcycle, gold beyond the mohor. Presented as custom, it is a criminal demand under the Dowry Prohibition Act 2018. An office that opens this conversation has told you everything you need to know about it.
Why the photograph is the weakest link
Almost every marriage media fraud rests on an image somebody else owns. The counter-measures cost nothing:
- Run a reverse image search on any photograph you are given before you meet.
- Ask for a short live video call, not more photographs. A person who will send twelve pictures but will not switch on a camera for ninety seconds is telling you something.
- Ask for one photograph taken today, in a place you name. Not a selfie from the gallery.
- Look for mismatches in dress, season and background across a set. Recycled albums rarely hold together.
We go through the tells in more detail in How to Spot a Fake Matrimony Profile, including the ones that survive a first video call.
Inflated income, especially from abroad
Overseas income is where families are most easily impressed and least able to check. Bangladesh sent 11.25 lakh workers abroad in 2025, according to The Business Standard, and the great majority went into jobs that pay far less than the figures quoted in drawing rooms. Recruitment debt of several lakh taka is normal in the first two years, and it does not appear in any biodata.
Ask for things that can be checked rather than things that can be claimed: the employer's full name and city, the job title as written on the contract, and the residence or work permit shown live on a video call rather than sent as a forwarded image. If a family will not do that for a marriage, the reason is rarely privacy. Finding a Probashi Groom with Verified Income sets out what a reasonable verification request looks like.
What the law actually gives you
Taking money for a service you never intended to provide is cheating under the Penal Code 1860, which covers deceiving a person into delivering property or money. Demanding dowry is a separate offence under the 2018 Act. If the fraud happened over a phone or online, cyber legislation may also apply, and that area of Bangladeshi law has been amended more than once recently, so confirm the current position with a lawyer.
Practically, your case is only as strong as your paperwork. Insist on a receipt with a trade licence number for every payment. Pay through bKash or a bank account in the business's name, never into a personal wallet, and keep the transaction messages. Save the biodata, photographs and chat history. If you have been cheated, file a general diary at the local thana quickly, take the papers with you, and speak to a family or criminal lawyer about a case rather than assuming the money is simply gone.
How to use a ghotok without being cheated
- Meet at the office, and photograph the trade licence and signboard.
- Agree the fee structure in writing before anything is paid, including what happens if no introduction is made.
- Pay in small stages against introductions actually delivered. Never pay a large lump sum for access to a list.
- Ask for two families they matched in the last year who are willing to speak to you. A real ghotok is proud of this. A fraud changes the subject.
- Share the minimum until a match is serious. Your daughter's photographs and your NID copy are not registration material.
- Keep one calm relative in the room who is allowed to say no. Most of these frauds work on momentum, not on cleverness.

The real fix is verification, not vigilance
Families cannot out-argue a professional. What actually removes this category of fraud is a system where identity is checked before anyone is introduced, and where you are not paying a stranger for access to a photocopied album. The Daily Star has written about how heavy and exhausting the marriage process has become for this generation, and a large part of that weight is the constant, unrelieved suspicion of not knowing who you are talking to.
On amarjibon, every profile is NID-verified with a liveness selfie check, so the person in the photograph is the person in the conversation. Your phone number stays private until you decide to share it, families can be involved from the first message, and there is no middleman holding your documents. The platform is bilingual in English and বাংলা, creating a profile is free, and PremEngine does the matching in the background.
