Getting Your Marriage Certificate Translated and Attested for Visas
Embassies do not accept a photograph of a Bangla kabin nama. Here is the full chain — English certificate, notary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation and embassy legalisation — in order.
A man in Doha photographs his kabin nama on his kitchen table, uploads it to a visa portal, and waits eleven weeks to be told the document is not acceptable. His wife in Comilla then has to start the whole thing again, in the right order, while he counts the days of his leave.
Almost every rejection of this kind comes from the same mistake: treating a Bangla kabin nama as a finished document. For any use outside Bangladesh it is the first item in a chain, not the last. Marriage certificate attestation in Bangladesh has a fixed sequence, and doing it out of order means starting again.
What embassies actually ask for
Missions in Dhaka usually want two things rather than one: the nikah nama or kabin nama from the kazi office, and a marriage certificate, in Bengali and in English. The Embassy of Sweden in Dhaka asks for exactly that pairing from the registrar who performed the registration.
The US Embassy in Dhaka publishes similar instructions, and adds a point worth repeating: affidavits of marriage sworn by the applicants or their relatives are not accepted. For Hindu, Buddhist and Christian marriages it accepts a certificate from the city corporation registrar's office, or one from the priest, church or temple that solemnised the marriage.
Requirements differ from mission to mission and they change. Read the current instructions published by the specific embassy or high commission you are dealing with before you spend money on anything below.
The chain, in order
- Get a certified copy from the registrar. The nakol comes from the licensed kazi who holds the register. If your marriage was never registered, nothing further is possible until it is. See Marriage Registration in Bangladesh.
- Get the English marriage certificate. Most registrars issue an English marriage registration certificate alongside the Bangla kabin nama. Ask for it at the same visit rather than three years later.
- Have the translation notarised where an English certificate is not available and a translation is used instead. A notary public or oath commissioner attests the translator's declaration.
- Local verification. Depending on the document and the district, the registrar's signature may need verifying through the relevant local authority before the ministry will accept it.
- Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation. The consular wing of the Ministry authenticates the document for use abroad. This step is the one everybody underestimates.
- Embassy legalisation. Many countries, particularly in the Gulf, require their own mission in Dhaka to legalise the document after the Ministry has attested it. Others do not. Check before you queue.
Getting the English version right
More files fail on the English text than on any stamp, and the reasons are mundane.
- Names must match passports exactly, including middle names, Md and Mohammad, and any spelling the passport office chose years ago. A translator who improves your spelling has broken your file.
- Dates must be consistent. The date the marriage was contracted and the date of registration are different entries on the form, and they belong in the right boxes.
- Numerals must be converted carefully, particularly the den mohor figure, which appears in both words and digits.
- Nothing may be left out. A translation that quietly omits a column an embassy wanted to see is worse than no translation.
If you want to check what each column contains before you hand it to anyone, our column-by-column guide to the kabin nama sets out all twenty-five.
Ministry attestation in practice
Attestation is handled by the consular and welfare wing of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka, and there are procedures for applying, paying the government fee and collecting. Appointment systems, fees and processing times change, so confirm the current process on the Ministry's own channels rather than relying on what a cousin did in 2021. There is a practical walkthrough of getting a kabin nama attested here that shows what the counter actually expects.
Two habits save people a great deal of trouble. First, take more certified copies than you think you need, because each destination country tends to keep one. Second, scan everything at each stage, including the receipts, and store the scans somewhere both spouses can reach without asking anyone's permission.
Country differences worth knowing
There is no single international standard here, and the difference between countries is not small.
- Gulf states. Employers, family visa offices and residence departments generally want the document attested by the Ministry in Dhaka and then legalised by the relevant embassy, and sometimes attested again on arrival.
- United Kingdom. The marriage certificate is one part of a family visa application that also turns on the sponsor's income. The thresholds and exemptions are set out in the House of Commons Library briefing on the family migration income requirement.
- United States, Canada and Australia. Certified translations by a competent translator are usually required, with a translator's certification, and the specific wording each system wants differs.
We do not give immigration advice and nobody should promise you an outcome. Where a decision matters, read the official guidance for that country and, if the case is complicated, pay for an hour with a qualified immigration lawyer. It is cheaper than a refused application.
Why files come back
- A photograph or photocopy submitted where a certified copy was required.
- A name spelt differently on the NID, the passport and the kabin nama.
- An unregistered marriage, or an affidavit offered in place of a registration.
- Attestation done in the wrong order, so the ministry stamp sits on a document the embassy will not recognise.
- A certificate that has expired for the purpose in question, where the receiving authority wants a recently issued copy.
If you married outside Bangladesh
A nikah performed abroad follows a different route. It normally has to be registered under the law of the country where it took place, and Bangladeshi missions abroad handle registration and related services for citizens. Doing both matters: a marriage recognised in one country and invisible in the other creates problems for children, property and inheritance later. The steps are set out in Nikah Abroad for Bangladeshis.
Start with a match who is serious about the paperwork
Attestation is the last mile of a long road, and the couples who travel it calmly are the ones who were honest early about immigration status, income, documents and timelines. Those are conversations to have at the beginning of a search, not after a date has been fixed. If your search crosses borders, Probashi Matrimony covers the practical planning.
On amarjibon, every profile is NID-verified with a liveness selfie check, families can be part of the conversation from the first message, and you can filter on the things that actually decide a cross-border match — district of origin, observance, education, and where someone is living now. It is bilingual in English and বাংলা, and your phone number stays private until you choose to share it.
